Classic cool climate Grenache, redolent with red cherry and plum aromatics, rose petal, warm baking spice and pencil shavings. This wine reminds me of a top flight Barolo on the palate with long, lingering tannins, firm acidity and impeccable ageability.
Sourced from a south facing hillside on our Chamisal Estate Vineyard, with rocky Tierra sandy loam soils. The combination of the free draining, devigorating soils with the extra heat that the south-facing slope accumulates makes it perfect for the late-ripening Grenache. Even being one of the warmest sites on our Estate, the climate in the Edna Valley is still at the cooler edge of where Grenache can successfully be grown and the wines show this in their focused acidity and dense, very ageable tannin.
A beautiful nose that leaps out of the glass with aromas of baked strawberries and cinnamon spice. On the palate, the wine is plush and intense with notes of ripe black fruits. The wine has a lingering and juicy finish.
The cool climate of the Edna Valley is at the limit of where great Rhône-style wines can be made. Our Rhônes favor complexity and texture rather than the jammy fruit-forwardness of their warmer-climate brethren. These wines are much more northern Rhône than southern Rhône in style. Rich in black fruit, game and spice aromatics, with big, broad tannins
