Tasting Notes Open/Close

Our 2022 Syrah opens with an inviting bouquet of black plum and ripe boysenberry, enriched by layers of black pepper and the warmth of sandalwood. On the palate, plush notes of dark fruit are beautifully complemented by hints of warm spices and a hint of Madagascar vanilla. The mid-palate showcases a lush fruit core, balanced by fine grained tannins and a precise, focused structure. Its lingering acidity and elegant finish suggest excellent aging potential, promising to evolve gracefully over the years.

Food Pairing Notes Open/Close

A perfect pairing for this Syrah includes a succulent grilled flat iron steak and a rich potato gratin.

Vineyard Notes Open/Close

Our San Luis Obispo Coast Syrah is predominantly made from our estate, but we also source some of the fruit from a handful of local vineyards within five miles. Inspired by the cooler climate Syrahs of the Northern Rhone, we co-ferment with a small amount of estate-grown viognier that we have inter-planted among our Syrah blocks to contribute floral lift and aromatic complexity.

Chamisal’s Syrah harvest usually comes well after the Pinots are in barrel. When Pinot Noir is the majority of your red wine production, Syrah winemaking is a bit paradoxical because of the opposing techniques. Our Syrah fermentations are incredibly dark and usually more extractive. And while we are very gentle with our Pinot Noir fermentations, the Syrah needs a lot of air and calls for long pump-overs. We press the Syrah off and cherish those middle press fractions while we are typically declassifying most Pinot Noir press wine. Fermented in a mix of open top Stainless-Steel tanks and New Open Top Oak puncheons. Aged for 10 months in barrels prior to bottling.
